IRC Symposium 2013: monitoring sustainable WASH service delivery , 9 to 11 April 2013, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

As water and sanitation coverage expands, the need to know the status of systems and services becomes even more critical. Governments are increasingly realising the importance of good monitoring information at multiple levels to ensure services are sustainable and investments are not wasted. The number of initiatives to strengthen WASH service monitoring is growing, new tools are being developed, and international indicators are being refined.

The 2013 IRC Symposium will provide a global platform for sharing these initiatives and experiences. Please mark your calendars for 9 to 11 April 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Join IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre and the Institute of Development Studies for a day of learning and reflection on improving service delivery in the rural water and sanitation sector. The aim of this one-day event is to introduce the key concepts of service delivery including the life-cycle costs approach (LCCA), and to reflect on the trends and shifts in the water and sanitation sector from a focus on infrastructure to service delivery. There is no fee for registration; however, participants need to arrange and pay for their own accommodation and any additional (travel) costs. Register  here

2013 WASH Sustainability Forum World Bank, Washington, D.C, USA, 11 and 12 March 2013

The 2013 WASH Sustainability forum will be held at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. on March 11 and 12 2013. This forum examined the role of collaboration, particularly with governments, in ensuring lasting WASH services. Bringing together a broad mix of stakeholders, the days' conversations provided a practical foundation for strengthening collaboration with governments and other development partners around the world.

Training from the Water Services That Last initiative “An introduction to Service Delivery – the role of the Service Authority” , 12 to 16 November 2012, The Hague, The Netherlands

IRC and Triple-S (the Water Services That Last initiative) are pleased to announce an an international learning and sharing event entitled “An introduction to Service Delivery – the role of the Service Authority”. This five day event, to be held between 12th and 16th November in the Netherlands, is aimed at senior WASH specialists working for development partners, NGOs or governments. Participants will be introduced to the latest thinking on what is needed to provide sustainable water services in rural areas, through presentations, exercises and group work, helped to identify the key building blocks to achieving sustainability within their own working environment.The event is focused on the most critical institutional level for sustainable service delivery, that of the service authority (decentralised local government at district, municipal, or commune level) and deals with key issues for this level including planning, regulation, monitoring and financing.

2012 Water and Health Conference: Science, Policy and Innovation , 29 October to 16 November 2012, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, U.S.A.

The 2012 Water and Health Conference: Science, Policy and Innovation will bring together academic research with policy, practice and network events. The event will consider drinking water supply, sanitation, hygiene and water resource in both developing and developed countries with strong public health emphasis.

On October 29 2012, IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre and partners will host three side-events for sustainable WASH services.

This year,  Stockholm World Water Week  will take place during 26 to 30 August and will focus on water and food security. IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre and partners will co-convene and participate in several side-events linked to the service delivery approach and sustainable WASH service delivery.

The RWSN Forum, held in Kampala in late 2011, brought together an outstanding group of international experts to share the latest knowledge about providing rural people with safe water.  Based on this meeting, the World Bank Water Anchor agreed to host a series of RWSN webinars.  The 11 webinars in the series will feature Forum speakers presenting and discussing in greater depth some of the best Forum presentations, including Catarina Fonseca’s presentation on the life-cycle costs approach

Learning and sharing event: Meeting the Challenge of Sustainability for WASH Investments, 31 January 2012, London, UK

This forum for WASH implementers -- NGOs, charities and consultants engaged in WASH projects in developing countries -- will look at the underlying causes of poor sustainability of WASH services and how they can be addressed. It will present findings from the Triple-S initiative and examples from organisations who have changed their policies and practices to improve sustainability.

6th Rural Water Supply Network Forum , 29 November - 1 December 2011, Kampala, Uganda

An opportunity to share experience and forge new solutions to the challenge of improving rural water supplies around the globe. This year 400 participants from small private enterprises, civil society, CBOs, NGOs, local and central governments, and donor agencies are expected to attend.

E-discussion for Rural Water Supply Network working group, 3 to 14 December 2012

Members of the Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) working group will convene online for two weeks in December in order to clarify roles and activities for each organisation involved. The online discussions will be moderated by IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre and RWSN.
